Miscellaneous Info
GRADE CLASSIFICATION OF STUDENTS
Students at Canon City High School will be classified as Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors, on the basis of having been promoted from a middle level school into the ninth grade, and thereafter on the basis of years of enrollment with second year students classified as sophomores, third year students as juniors, and fourth year students as seniors. Students will remain classified as seniors from the fourth year on until the number of credits required for graduation are earned or they are no longer eligible to attend high school.

CLASS REGISTRATION
..
The Cañon City High School master class schedule is built based on student class registration requests. The master schedule lists classes, the number of sections offered, and the block classes are to be taught. Also from the registration requests the staff teaching allocations and assignments are made. Student requests for classes, especially those for an upper-level academic class, are honored to the best of the CCHS staff’s ability. It is possible that classes may not be offered if too few students register for that class. Honors classes are designated (H). These higher-level classes are more demanding and rigorous than other classes.
..
During second semester, students indicate which classes they intend to take for the following school year. It is imperative that student/parent/guardian request courses that are in-line with student needs, goals, and post-secondary plans. Class registration should receive careful consideration by students and their parent/guardian. Several courses require an application form to be completed and approved prior to the student being accepted in the class. These courses are identified under “Recommended Prerequisites” column throughout this guide. Applications are available from counselors or the class instructors. Choice of subjects should be as final as possible. Students must include at least three full semester alternative classes or the equivalent when completing registration paperwork. These alternative classes will be used if/when requested classes are in conflict or full. The student’s parent/guardian signature must be completed with a daytime phone number provided on the registration form as approval and to validate the selected classes.

SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY
Class changes, even academically valid changes, after the master class schedule has been created undermine the very core of the master class schedule process. Withdrawals from classes could jeopardize the offering of any course, especially second semester, which will have a direct impact on the other students enrolled and their class schedules. A “W” (withdrawal) will be placed on a student’s transcript when there is withdrawal from any requested class each quarter the class was scheduled. Students are responsible for ensuring their schedule and/or adjusted schedule meet athletic/extracurricular eligibility requirements. A “W/F” (withdrawal/fail) will be placed on a student’s transcript if the student drops after the first week of class.

DUE PROCESS
..
Family Educational rights and Privacy Act of 1974 assures students and their parents of the right to inspect the student’s school records and to control the release of these records to others outside of school. Parents (or students over 18) may contact a counselor if they wish to inspect the student’s records.

ACADEMIC RECOVERY POLICY
..
Students who fail required classes for graduation may need to retake those classes outside the regular school day. Alternative credit may be earned at night school, summer school, correspondence or online opportunities with counselor approval. Night School course fee is $90 per session; Summer School course fee is $90 per session. Course fee(s) must be paid prior to the release of credit by the teacher to the student’s transcript. If the student fails to earn the credit within the session, the session cost will not be refunded or carried to another session. Students who successfully recover credits at CCHS’s night or summer school programs will earn a “P” (pass) on their transcript. This credit recovery grade will not count towards GPA, total grade points or class rank.

INDEPENDENT BLOCK
..
Seniors may choose to take an independent block with parent permission. An indepen¬dent block will allow students to choose how they want to utilize their time. Students may be in the library or Commons or off campus; students may not be in the hallways, at lockers or loitering in parking lots. Written parent permission must be on file to allow an Independent Block. Counselor and administrative approval must be secured on the application form.
..
SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS
..
An Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) will be developed for students identified as having an education disability. The plan will be formulated by the school district through an appropriate legal process in cooperation with parents or legal guardians. The successful completion of this plan will qualify the student for graduation.
